United wait on Owen scan - 3rd November 2011

Sir Alex Ferguson is waiting for the results of a scan on the thigh injury Michael Owen suffered at Old Trafford on Wednesday night as the Manchester United striker faces up to another period on the sidelines. The injury-plagued front-man was handed a rare start in United's 2-0 Champions League win over Otelul Galati. Owen was involved in the build-up to Antonio Valencia's eighth minute opener. However, in making a run to the near post, Owen suffered a thigh injury which convinced the former England man immediately that he would not be able to continue.

West Ham face a daunting trip to Old Trafford as they look to get their first points on the board.

While the Hammers have made a dismal start to the campaign, Manchester United's encouraging early form has been overshadowed by the goalscoring exploits of main title rivals Chelsea.

The Red Devils came out on top against Chelsea in the Community Shield before cruising to a 3-0 victory over Newcastle in their Premier League opener.

However, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Fulham last weekend after twice surrendering the lead and will now be determined to return to winning ways.

Sir Alex Ferguson will at least be able to recall Wayne Rooney, who missed out at Craven Cottage due to a stomach bug but has trained all week.

Ferguson has no fresh injury worries to consider following the match against Fulham and has revealed that Rio Ferdinand and Anderson could soon be back in action.

Ferdinand has returned to training after recovering from the knee problem that ruled him out of the World Cup, while Anderson (cruciate ligament) played for the reserves this week.

West Ham news

West Ham could not have asked for a tougher test after losing their first two games of the season and, with Chelsea to come next weekend, supporters may already be fearing the prospect of a long relegation battle.

Having played poorly in the 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa, there were some positive signs in terms of performance against Bolton last Saturday.

However, an impressive first-half showing counted for nothing as the Hammers capitulated after the interval and the lack of confidence spilled over into the Carling Cup clash on Tuesday.

West Ham laboured for 90 minutes against newly-promoted League Two outfit Oxford before a last-gasp Scott Parker goal sealed their place in the next round.

Avram Grant will be starting to feel the pressure just three matches into his reign as manager and may decide to make changes for the journey north.

Defence will be the main area of concern after conceding six goals so far, and Grant will hope to have Matthew Upson back from the knock that forced him off against Bolton.

Summer signing Thomas Hitzlsperger is still sidelined with the injury he sustained on international duty, while Jack Collison (knee) is a long-term absentee.
