Only a soft decision by referee Mike Dean prevented Owen from giving Newcastle an early lead which might have saved us all from this turgid, forgettable scrap. It would certainly have been a relief for Keegan's shot-shy skipper.

Michael Owen talks about his England career so far, picks out the highlights of playing for his country and talks about his Liverpool team-mates in the national squad.

Michael, how much did your achievements for the England youth sides prepare you for senior international football?

"Well, the whole point of playing youth football is to prepare you for the full team, same at club level you play through the ranks to prepare you for playing for the first team. I played for England schoolboys at fifteen and then at every level up. I only played one under-21 game, and then I was into the full senior squad, so it certainly prepared me. It's similar to playing European football at the club really, but it's certainly different to playing domestic league.

Young, Gifted and on the Bench; Michael Owen, 17, Waits His Turn on England's Team - 17th June 1998

Somewhere in the world, a soccer prodigy is born every year. There's usually an amazing story about a five-goal game and about offers from deep-pocketed European clubs. Comparisons to Pele, who at age 17 raised the World Cup trophy in 1958, are inevitable. Fame and fortune seem so certain, but such expectations are seldom realized.

He is the youngest player to wear the fabled colors of the English national team this century, and has rapidly surpassed the Spice Girls as Britain's newest teen sensation. Already under immense pressure to restore England's winning tradition after the team failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup, Coach Glenn Hoddle is hearing the emotional pleas from the public and media to throw Owen into the starting lineup.

At the moment, it doesn't appear Hoddle will make the bold move. Indications are that the coach will stick with the striking tandem of captain Alan Shearer and veteran Teddy Sheringham for England's second World Cup match, Monday against Romania in Toulouse.
