Jamie Carragher has pleaded with Liverpool supporters not to taint his charity testimonial on Saturday by subjecting Michael Owen to a hostile reception, despite admitting the former Anfield icon “upset some people” by signing for bitter rivals Manchester United last season.

On This Day in 2001: Germany 1 England 5 - Magnificent Michael does the trick - 1st September 2010

We had to believe it, because we were there. Otherwise we might have fancied we had been victims of an elaborate hoax. Like those people who believed that man never actually reached the moon. Last night England achieved something that happens as rarely as a blue moon as David Beckham's celebrated groin withstood the test, and his team came through what had promised to be their most exacting examination in the grandest of manners. On this day in 2005: Michael Owen Signs for Newcastle United - 31st August 2010

The Reds dominated play right from the start and the Hammers’ resistance could only last until the 33rd minute when Wayne Rooney opened his account for the season from the spot. Goals of real class from Nani and Dimitar Berbatov followed after the break, sealing as convincing and comfortable a 3-0 win as you are ever likely to witness.

Avram Grant’s side arrived at Old Trafford bottom of the table and without a win in their first two games – defeats to Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers, which on both occasions saw them concede three goals. Their narrow 1-0 midweek win over Oxford in the Carling Cup offered some respite, but the second round of the League Cup is a far cry from Old Trafford, and the gulf in class was clearly visible.
