On This Day in 2001: Germany 1 England 5 - Magnificent Michael does the trick - 1st September 2010

We had to believe it, because we were there. Otherwise we might have fancied we had been victims of an elaborate hoax. Like those people who believed that man never actually reached the moon. Last night England achieved something that happens as rarely as a blue moon as David Beckham's celebrated groin withstood the test, and his team came through what had promised to be their most exacting examination in the grandest of manners. Long before the end, the sheer impudence of the victory was almost becoming an insult to their hosts.

On this day in 2005: Michael Owen Signs for Newcastle United - 31st August 2010

Quote of the day: "When it came down to Real Madrid or Newcastle there was no question in my mind."

Amazing scenes at St. James' Park on Wednesday as Michael Owen became a Newcastle player for the next four years and signed his contract that contains no get-out clause.

Owen said all the right things as a very negative press conference was handled well by our smiling new no.10 with Freddy Shepherd having to intervene at one point when an ITV reporter pushed Owen on whether he would stay more than a year.

Manchester United 3 West Ham 0 - 28th August 2010

United were just too good for West Ham. The Reds dominated play right from the start and the Hammers’ resistance could only last until the 33rd minute when Wayne Rooney opened his account for the season from the spot. Goals of real class from Nani and Dimitar Berbatov followed after the break, sealing as convincing and comfortable a 3-0 win as you are ever likely to witness.

Avram Grant’s side arrived at Old Trafford bottom of the table and without a win in their first two games – defeats to Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers, which on both occasions saw them concede three goals. Their narrow 1-0 midweek win over Oxford in the Carling Cup offered some respite, but the second round of the League Cup is a far cry from Old Trafford, and the gulf in class was clearly visible.

West Ham face a daunting trip to Old Trafford as they look to get their first points on the board.

While the Hammers have made a dismal start to the campaign, Manchester United's encouraging early form has been overshadowed by the goalscoring exploits of main title rivals Chelsea.
